What a Hipobuy parcel costs, from item price to settled shipping

The cost breakdown Hipobuy publishes, which parts move with weight, the optional services priced in yuan, and the exchange rate between them and your card.

The cost breakdown Hipobuy publishes

Hipobuy's Service & Fees page (Service & Fees) promises a free shopping agent service: no service fee on orders. Its formula has three terms: what the item cost you, the international shipping and the customs charge, with optional services on top. The item term covers the listing price and the seller's delivery inside China. Shipping is priced by weight, line and destination. The customs declaration charge is generally RMB 10.00 per parcel, depending on the line.

For this site's question only one of those parts matters: international shipping, because it is the part charged on an estimate and settled later. Item cost is paid when you order; the declaration charge is per parcel and does not move with weight. Domestic shipping can also be settled: Hipobuy's order status list has a "Clear Balance" state for when the real item or domestic shipping cost exceeds what you paid.

Five stations of one order's cost: item price, domestic shipping, a zero agent fee, international shipping by weight and a customs declaration fee of about 10 CNY

Fixed parts that do not move with weight

Each line in the estimator carries per-parcel charges on top of the weight charge: a fuel charge and a handling charge. In the snapshot the handling charge is the same on every line, with a base figure of 6.67 CNY and a displayed figure of 10.01 CNY, close to the "generally RMB 10" on the fees page. Fuel charges vary by line, from nothing on some courier lines to several tens of yuan on some dedicated air lines.

Because those parts are fixed per parcel, they cancel out of the settlement: a heavier or lighter parcel pays the same fuel and handling. The break-even tool therefore works only with the weight charge. The chart below shows one UK line with and without its fixed parts.

Optional services priced in yuan

Two value-added services bear on weight decisions. The Rehearsal Parcel is a fixed 20 CNY per parcel. Custom photos cost 1 CNY each (Service Rules); regular inspection photos are included, and Hipobuy says there are generally three per item: front view, rear view, and either a side view or a close-up of the logo.

A custom photo is the cheapest way to answer a weight question about one item before you rehearse the whole parcel: ask for a photo showing whether the product box is still there, or a photo of the item on a scale if Hipobuy's staff will take one. Whether they will is up to the warehouse; the service is described as photos from angles you choose.

Exchange rate between the yuan figures and your card

Hipobuy prices in yuan and displays your chosen currency. On 16 October 2026 the site's display rate was 1 CNY = 0.1733 USD, so the 20 CNY rehearsal fee displays as about USD 3.47. In Hipobuy's August 2025 guide screenshot the same fee showed as USD 3.06, so the displayed dollar amount has moved while the yuan fee has not.

The display rate carries a margin over the market rate. Measured independently in October 2026, that margin came to about 16.2 percent, consistent with a comparison of Hipobuy's rate against the market rate on the same day. For the break-even decision this does not matter, because the fee and the step prices are converted at the same rate; work in yuan and the margin cancels.

Paying in and getting money back

Hipobuy accepts PayPal, international cards (Visa, Mastercard and Discover; the refund guide also names Diners), Klarna for orders and shipping but not for topping up the balance, and bank transfer. Hipobuy's PayPal page gives the PayPal fee as 5% + USD 0.37; another Hipobuy page gives 4.4% + USD 0.30. PayPal payments also run against a daily cap, which resets at midnight Beijing time.

Settlement refunds go to your Hipobuy balance. Withdrawals from the balance go back to the original top-up channel first, according to Hipobuy's withdrawal guide, and an eCheck payment takes 5 to 7 working days to clear. If you expect a refund from an over-estimate, the cheapest place to use it is usually the next order.

Four notes on payments: PayPal fee as stated on two Hipobuy pages, accepted cards, refunds to balance, withdrawals to the original channel
