Six worked Hipobuy weigh-ins, from a clear no to a clear yes
Real lines from the 16 October 2026 snapshot, invented parcels, and the same arithmetic the break-even tool uses.
Case 1: two tees and a hoodie to the United States
The submit page estimates 1150 g and you think the packed parcel could differ by 150 g either way. You plan to use the cheapest US line by step, an air line that bills actual weight at 13.50 CNY per 100 g. Prepaid weight charge: 162.00 CNY.
Heavier outcomes cost top-ups of up to 13.50 CNY. Outcomes more than 100 g lighter are refunded. In between, from 1,050 g to 1,100 g, the parcel drops one step and keeps 13.50 CNY: that happens in 51 of the 301 grams of your range, an average of 2.29 CNY. The line check finds no switch: the cheapest line at the estimate stays the cheapest across the range. Verdict: not worth it on money alone. Even the worst case is below the fee.

Case 2: boxed sneakers to the United Kingdom
A pair of sneakers in their box plus a cap. Estimate 2030 g, doubt 150 g, and you want a tracked express line that charges 77.52 CNY per 500 g. Prepaid weight charge: 599.46 CNY.
The estimate sits just over the 2,000 g step boundary. Anything packed between 1,880 g and 2,000 g drops a whole 500 g step and is not refunded, because it is less than one step below the estimate: 121 of 301 grams of your range, worth 77.52 CNY each time, 31.16 CNY on average. Verdict: worth it.
Move the estimate to 1,900 g on the same line and the verdict reverses: the range then sits inside one 500 g block and nothing can be lost. On wide steps, the position of the estimate inside the step matters more than the weight itself.

Case 3: a jacket and jeans to Canada
Estimate 2050 g, doubt 200 g, on the 1,000 g surface line at 44.27 CNY a step, a slow but cheap choice for parcels around two kilograms. Prepaid weight charge: 256.63 CNY.
Every gram of the lighter half of the range is less than one step below the estimate, so nothing is ever refunded. From 1,850 g to 2,000 g the parcel drops a step and keeps 44.27 CNY: 151 of 401 grams, 16.67 CNY on average. The line check finds no switch: the cheapest line at the estimate stays the cheapest across the range. Verdict: depends on how unsure you are. If you are fairly sure the parcel is over two kilograms, skip the rehearsal; if the jacket might be lighter than it looks, it starts to pay.

Case 4: rings and caps to Germany
A light parcel: estimate 600 g, doubt 150 g, on a dedicated air line at 5.85 CNY per 100 g. The settlement side is almost nothing: the worst case keeps 5.85 CNY and the average is 0.02 CNY.
The line check is more interesting. At 600 g, the cheapest snapshot line is another air line with a lower fixed charge and dearer steps. If the parcel packs at 701 g, the line in this case is 9.61 CNY cheaper than that one; averaged over the range, the exact weight is worth 3.06 CNY in line choice. Verdict: not worth it on money alone, on settlement and on line choice alike. Read the estimate, pick the line that is cheapest at that weight, and keep the 20 CNY.

Case 5: a heavy haul to Australia
Several orders combined: estimate 4050 g, doubt 100 g, on the 1,000 g economy air line at 104.13 CNY a step. Prepaid weight charge: 645.06 CNY.
The estimate sits 50 g above a step boundary. If the parcel packs at 4,000 g or less, it drops a whole kilogram of postage, 104.13 CNY, and none of it is refunded. That covers 51 of 201 grams of your range, an average of 26.42 CNY. The line check finds no switch: the cheapest line at the estimate stays the cheapest across the range. Verdict: worth it. This is the shape where a rehearsal clearly earns its fee: wide steps, an expensive step, an estimate just over a boundary.
Hipobuy warns that customs are more inclined to class a parcel above 10 kg as commercial. This haul is well under that, but very large combined parcels raise questions a rehearsal cannot answer.

Case 6: a flat-priced land line to France
One land line to France charged the same 442.50 CNY weight charge at every weight queried, from 500 g to 3,000 g. On such a line an over-estimate costs nothing, so the settlement side of a rehearsal is worth exactly zero: not worth it on money alone.
The line check points elsewhere. At 2400 g the cheapest snapshot line to France is a 100 g air line, and it stays the cheapest across the whole range. The flat line only makes sense near its upper weights or for bulky parcels where its fixed price beats volumetric billing elsewhere, and that is a question about dimensions. If the box size is the unknown, a rehearsal answers it; if the weight is, it does not matter here.

What the six cases add up to
Three rules of thumb come out of the cases. First, on lines with 50 g or 100 g steps a rehearsal almost never pays back on settlement; only a handful of 100 g lines charge 20 CNY or more for one step. Second, on 500 g and 1,000 g lines, look at where the estimate sits inside its step: just above a boundary is expensive, the middle of a step is safe. Third, near a crossing between two lines, the exact weight is worth something even when the settlement side is not.
